About

A bit about how I became interested in the topic. My original interest began with the history and future of nuclear weapons, and I read several books related to them, such as Richard Rhodes’s magnificent The Making of the Atomic Bomb. I understood that nuclear weapons were clearly a major threat which needs to be greatly reduced by international action. But at the same time, I was quite puzzled about how people bin nuclear power in the same category as nuclear weapons. I was disheartened when I saw liberals and environmentalists (of which I consider myself to be one) who care about the environment and about global warming, vehemently argue against nuclear power. Even Al Gore does not give it serious thought. I was even more baffled when I read about the obvious promise nuclear power holds for humanity as a clean, efficient, and more importantly one of the safest sources of power that we can have. Clearly there is still great miscommunication between public and political perceptions of nuclear power and factual reality. I believe that we all need to consider nuclear power as one of our biggest allies in fighting climate change and the energy crisis.

On this blog, I hope to keep track of all things nuclear, from weapons to nuclear power. While it will serve as a platform for my views, I also consider it a platform for a learning experience. So all suggestions, comments and criticism are most welcome. So is anyone who is interested in contributing. I will start with posting some nuclear-related reviews from my old regular website.

    Emily Lamont Says:

    Dear Nuclear Dreams–

This morning former Vice President Al Gore challenged American to transition completely to renewable sources of energy within 10 years. Following Gore’s speech in Washington, D.C. today, Katie Couric had a chance to sit down with Gore to discuss his plan.

Gore proposes that making the commitment to renewable sources will lead to less pollution, lower costs, and “a better national security guarantee.” Couric questions whether the political will is there to change the way we do business so dramatically in this country. Gore admits he does not think it’s in the White House – right now, anyway.

Over the course of the interview, Gore discusses the value or lack thereof of clean coal, nuclear power, and natural gas. In contrast to T. Boone Pickens (http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/i_video/main500251.shtml?id=4245623n?source=search_video), Gore describes natural gas as a “transition fuel”.

In the midst of the presidential campaign, Gore hopes Senators Obama or McCain will take on his 10 year challenge. Moreover, Gore offers his opinion on the two candidates’ commitment to the environment. Gore explains “if you’re asking the question, which one is better on this issue? Clearly Senator Obama is.”

For more on this interview, watch tonight on the “CBS Evening News with Katie Couric” at 6:30 pm EDT.

If you have any questions, let me know. Also, we would love to hear your reaction to the story, so if you post about it I will be sure to pass your thoughts along to our team.

    Thank you.

    Emily

Understanding the Impact Thorium will have on the Energy Economy

To know the future of energy, you must gain an understanding of rapidly growing movement to implement Thorium as a major component of the energy economy.
As recently reported in the Wall Street Journal, The Guardian and Times of London, the potential of generating electricity from thorium resolves issues of concern raised by nuclear power.
You can not use Thorium to make Nuclear Weapons – it is non-proliferating
There is 4 times as much Thorium on the planet as Uranium
The United States has 1000 years worth of Thorium
Thorium energy generation will recycle and eliminate nuclear waste
The U.S. has built Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactors before
A Thorium generator, such as a LiFTeR type, can be developed in a few years
Thorium creates less than 1% of the waste of Uranium Power
A Thorium power plant needs no pressure vessel or containment building
The cost per Megawatt would be less than 2 million dollars

United States Congressman Joe Sestak (PA-7) as well as Orin Hatch and Harry Reid have all submitted bills to congress to credit funding to complete the research and development of the Thorium Fuel cycle..
Several new publicly traded businesses have started up in that past few years to take advantage of the new Thorium economy that is rapidly emerging.
As a result of so much activity in the rising field of Thorium energy production it was decided that a professional organization had to be created to help answer the demand for information regarding this topic. In spring of 2009 The Thorium Energy Alliance, a pending 501(c)3 educational organization, was organized.
The Thorium Energy Alliance (T.E.A.) educates our leaders with round table discussions, provides them with expert witnesses, white papers, and demonstrates the technology and it’s uses. TEA provides staff with executive summaries and talking points supporting the Thorium technologies.
TEA engages the public through all media channels. Tea provides the public with experts to appear on radio and television. TEA will provide subjects for interviews for all media.
TEA is creating scholarships to encourage engineers to learn about Thorium
TEA is producing Text books, and learning materials for College engineering courses
TEA generates media including , Webcasts, Pod Casts, Videos, pamphlets, books and articles.
TEA creates highly targeted ad campaigns in print media, video, targeted mail.
TEA tracks the milestones in the creation of a Thorium Economy.

ThoriumEnergyAlliance.com presents the first ever Thorium Energy Conference Oct 19,20 at the Kellog Conference Center at Gallaudet University, Washington D.C.
You can Join the Thorium Energy Alliance and attend the conference on October 19th & 20th to gain first hand knowledge of the latest developments in the Thorium energy future.
